Daniel Githiomi
ALU, Course: Computing
My name is Daniel Githiomi. I am of Kenyan natioanlity, born and raised in the heart of Kenya, Nairobi. Currently, I am a student at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) which is in partnership with African Leadership University (ALU). Currently a second year student at the ALU campus based in Mauritius and I am enjoying my time here despite the ups and downs. Prior to coming to study on the island, I was a student at a dedicated Software Development institiution named Moringa School. Here, I spent a solid 10 months pursing a learning intensive course that is software development. It has and continues to give me an edge with a wide variety of knowledge spanning across a variety of programming languages including, but not limited to: HTML/CSS, Javascript, JQuery, Bootstrap, Android Development using Java, Kotlin and Flutter as well as database knowledge of PostgreSQL, MongoDB and MySQL.
I am a competent, committed, self-motivated and adaptable software developer specializing in both Mobile and Web Applications Development. I am curious and enthusiastic about transferring my ideas into solutions for some of the most challenging technical problems of our generation with a belief that data-driven processes lead to great products and a diverse future. I desire to develop solutions to difficult problems, to create, innovate, and define the next era of modern software. With a logical perspective as well as a good eye for details, I am well conversant with both Back-end (Server-Side) and Fronted (UI/UX Design) programming. I enjoy the challenge of learning new things in the ever-changing world of code and challenging myself to be better and improve on my skills. I find purpose in connecting people through the work that I do as a software developer in creating interactive software. I value integrity and loyalty, understanding that both are fundamental in building strong and lasting relationships be it professional or personal.
African Leadership University (ALU)
Wanting to study at ALU!
Immediately after my high school graduation, I was always sure that I wanted to go to an institution abroad. Where? That I didn't know. And so my search for an institution began. I soon found African Leadership University when I stumbled upon an advert for a Patoranking Scholarship. I couldn't let the opportunity get away and I applied immediately.
Application Process!
The ALU application process was easy. It wasn't a tedious process and that made the process enjoyable for me. It was fun and informative process and got to learn about the institution in the process. I was even able to get a chance to select whom I would have as a roomamate.
Moving to ALU!
Moving to ALU was not an easy task. There was poor communication of the travel dates and when it was confirmed, it was too soon and all arrangements had to be made and implemented on such short notice. Considering this was also during peak of COVID-19 times, making travelling arrangements was beyond tedious but became all worth it upon reaching the tropical island.
Class Experience!
Getting to campus was an immediate shock. It was just not what I was expecting. The campus was much smaller than I had immagined and the hostel rooms even smaller. The classes were a step-up. They were nicely finished with a modern touch. We didn't use them much as due to the COVID-19 situation but all in all, I was happy to be part of it all.
Advice to prospective students!
To anyone wishing to join the ALU community, go ahead. It may not be the same experience due to the different system in place at the moment that involves the setting up of hubs, but joining ALU is not an opportunity you should let slip away by any chance.
The Mauritian Experience
First catamaran on the island!
If there is a place more beautiful than the island of Mauritius, it would be the large ocean that surrounds it. With miles and miles of nothing but beautiful waters to transverse, it is trully remarkable what one gets to see when touring on a catamaran. For a very affordable amount, one is able to get a full day experience on this vessel and tour the waters of Mauritius accompanied by friendly faces and excuisite on-board food.
Hiking to the highest point!
There is more to see on the Island of Mauritius than the sandy beautiful beaches. To the south of the island, is a beautiful place called Le Morne. It is a historic place that is monumental to the people of Mauritius as it holds key memories of a place where people lost their lives at the hands of colonialists. But in contrast, there is a beautiful beach that accompanies this monumental location to brighten the mood.
Can't all be fun and games!
This was a new and exciting experience for me. It was my first time haaving the opportunity to have a blue-colar job that paid me a sum of money at the end of each month. It was an enthrilling chance to work in an actual working environment with serious cut-throat deaadlines and being on the front line of getting to know all company operations and how I, an IT Intern, contributed to the fluid flow of office activities.
